As the Lunar Apogee, Lilith represents initiation into the mysteries of the underworld, the composting, digestive energy of the hungry dead and the mouth of the devouring earth.
When is Lilith most active?
Lilith’s energy becomes most activated during the Balsamic Moon phase when the sky is darkest just before the New Moon.
Transformative energy is present during this phase of the Lunar cycle, making it an excellent time to explore the underworld spaces within us to bring our shadows into the light. This is where poison becomes medicine.
Wider Spirals of Initiation
Lilith asks us to consider what we need to sacrifice or shed so we can more authentically understand our true nature and our true divinity.
She guides us into our own personal underworlds leading us through symbolic deaths and literal endings elucidated through the sign and house she occupies in our natal charts.
Through Lilith’s shadow work we can come to know the primal forces that are echoed in our existence. Her placement in our charts helps us uncover how we acquire our power.
And when worked with in witchcraft, Lilith can help us uncover our hidden magical name, the nature of our desire, and how to unlock our magical potential.
Passing through the gates of initiation not only change us but completely make us over. This process can only happen when we confront our personal shadow landscapes (aka facing our demons). If we are dedicated to the work, we will eventually emerge more accepting of who we are in all our parts.

Lilith is a sheyd/night spirit (a type of betwixt spirit from Jewish tradition) and is sometimes referred to as the Queen of ‘Demons’.
Dissatisfied with being Adam’s wife, she decided to follow her own path. She uttered the ineffable name of God to claim her power and leave Adam and the Garden behind. Walking one’s own path isn’t easy, it comes with consequences, and this is symbolized in Lilith’s story.
Outside of the garden of eden in her new wilderness home (the preferred local of shedim), three angels come to her at God’s command demanding she come back to the Garden of Eden to be with Adam.
But she refused to give up her freedom and return to the life she had had before. For this she was cursed by the Divine.
In exchange for her chosen freedom, she would have to kill 100 of her children each day. From this perspective, Lilith represents loss, grief in the face of an impossible choice and resistance, injustice, and sacrifice.
She symbolizes that when we choose to follow a certain path, even one that is destined and desired, we also close ourselves off to other potential pathways, fates, and destinies.
Lilith chose to leave her paradise home in the Garden of Eden for the sake of her autonomy and self-determination with great personal sacrifice.
In her anguish, she becomes a succubus, inducing sleep paralysis and nightmares while stealing semen to produce her demon children.
Now, Jewish magic is full of practices to protect against Lilith, especially for newborns, pregnant people, mothers, and parents.
Protection bowls along with other amulets capture Lilith in the center hemmed in by incantations to bind or keep Lilith from doing harm. I think these practices are well-advised when engaging with the spirit of Lilith.
For personal evolution, I think the energy of Lilith can be a very powerful tool to work with. It’s also safer than drawing up the entity herself, but I’m not here to tell anyone what to do.
