How to work with the Jinn in witchcraft

Spirit Work Witchcraft: The Jinn Ancient Spirits of Magic

6 minutes read time.

The Jinn are ancient spirits who dwell between worlds, shaping destiny, and sharing occult secrets to those who listen.

In witchcraft, their presence offers deep mystery and profound transformation.

The Jinn in Islamic and Cross-Cultural Lore

The Jinn (Djinn) have mostly found a home in Islam and Arab lore, but can be found in other traditions as well.

In Jewish tradition they are referred to as the shedim and are often compared with the Faeries of European spirit traditions. Like the Fae, the Jinn are liminal shapeshifting spirits that perform magic, divine the future, and fall in love with humans.

Let’s explore the beautiful world of the Jinn; spirits formed from smokeless fire:

خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍۢ كَٱلْفَخَّارِ وَخَلَقَ ٱلْجَآنَّ مِن مَّارِجٍۢ مِّن نَّارٍۢ

He created humankind from ˹sounding˺ clay like pottery, And created jinn from a ˹smokeless˺ flame of fire.

Quran Surah Ar-Rahman – 14-24

The Magical Landscape of the Jinn

The landscape of the Other World is vast, a network of extra-dimensional spaces.

One such space the Jinn have shown me is the betwixt space where the mountains meet the sky. If you attune your psychic awareness to this small sliver of space, it opens into a vision of captivating vistas.

Lore says the Jinn reside at Mount Qaf, a range of mystic mountains made of emeralds, veiled from the eyes of the physical world.

Djinn Characteristics and Nature

The Jinn are a distinct form of free will consciousness with their own lore, magic, and ways of life.

They are known to shift into animal forms including snakes, cats, lizards, and more. Djinn have families, practice religion, and eventually die.

Their existence predates Islam, but many are said to have converted to Islam while some became Christian and others Jewish.

Skilled in the magical arts, Jinn can divine the future, travel in an instant, change shape, and cross over into the physical world. I once had a dream where Jinn were living in the cracks between the bark in a grove of pine trees.

Jinn Magic and Spirit Companionship

Having a Jinni companion in our witchcraft practices can offer us inspiration, protection, and instruction in magic. Some djinn are famous for inspiring great poets and artists, similar to the genii in ancient Roman religion.

Some Djinn love to come along for magical adventures, participate in ecstatic rituals, and be present for daily life. Any time I am working magic in nature, my Jinniyah (a female Jinni) is with me as a trusted guide and companion.

She reveals occult knowledge, showing me how to work magic and to position myself to meet the magical forces of nature.

How to Connect With a Jinni: A Step-by-Step Guide

So you want to start working with the Jinn?

I recommend you read my guide on the basics of spirit work witchcraft before diving into work with the Jinn.

These are deep forces of nature with their own unique way of being. And as stories and experience has conveyed, engaging with liminal spirits of the other world will have consequences, and not always pleasant ones.

But when all is aligned and safe passage is granted, relationships with spirits can be deeply profound, fulfilling, and meaningful.

I also recommend you listen to this podcast to learn about Jinn lore to get an idea of what you might encounter and to ground your knowledge in the cultures in which the Jinn have made their home.

Okay, let’s get into the steps to meeting a Jinni.

Steps to Meeting and Working with a Jinni

  1. Hone your intuition: Before reaching out to any Jinn or any other spirits, spend a considerable amount of time honing your intuition. Don’t rush to meet spirits if you are not prepared to potentially forge a lasting relationship.
  2. Practice Discernment: If you already have an established spirit practice and are used to discerning different types of Other World entities, you’re on the right track. This step needs to be solid so you know you are indeed contacting a Jinn and not another type of spirit. This skill comes with practice, but can be bolstered by a knowledgable mentor who can help guide you.
  3. Cast your spell: Set your intention and open the way into the world of the Jinn. Choose a quiet time, light a candle, and make your petition to the spirit world. Be specific, requesting to meet a Jinn who wants to work with you and will harmoniously align with you. After your spell is cast, sit in a visionary altered state and notice what impressions, images, or sensations come up for you.
  4. Making contact: If the Jinn are interested in you and your request was heard and granted, a Jinni spirit should come to you sometime over the next few weeks either during your regular witchcraft practice or show up in a dream. If this happens and all feels well and aligned for you, give the Jinni an offering of spirit nourishment.
  5. Spirit Nourishment: Like other spirits, Jinn need to be fed, favorites for them are perfumes, flowers and herbs, and candles.
  6. Get a container: The Jinn love for us to host them in beautiful containers. Place it on your altar and open it often. Or get a piece of jewelry that you can wear that can ‘house’ them.

Building a Relationship with the Jinn in Witchcraft

Depending on the type of Jinn who comes to you will determine what your relationship will be like. Connect frequently, at least weekly at first to commune with them and be present and receptive as the relationship develops.

The nature of your spirit work, witchcraft, and jinn magic together will become apparent in time and with proper nourishment of the relationships. Remember to keep yourself heart centered, grounded in love, connection, and devotion.
